Seminar: Self-designing Data Systems for the AI Era

Seminar on Self-designing Data Systems for the AI Era

abstract:
Data systems are everywhere. A data system is a collection of data structures and algorithms working together to achieve complex data processing tasks. For example, with data systems that utilize the correct data structure design for the problem at hand, we can reduce the monthly bill of large-scale data applications on the cloud by hundreds of thousands of dollars. We can accelerate data science tasks by dramatically speeding up the computation of statistics over large amounts of data. We can train drastically more neural networks within a given time budget, improving accuracy. However, knowing the right data system design for any given scenario is a notoriously hard problem; there is a massive space of possible designs, while no single design is perfect across all data, AI models, and hardware contexts. In addition, building a new system may take several years for any given (fixed) design. We will discuss our quest for the first principles of AI system design. We will show that it is possible to reason about this massive design space. This allows us to create a self-designing system that can take drastically different shapes to optimize for the workload, hardware, and available cloud budget using a grammar for systems. These shapes include designs that are discovered automatically and do not (always) exist in the literature or industry, yet they can be more than 10x faster for modern AI and big data applications. We will discuss examples from diverse AI areas, including image storage and classification, neural networks, statistics, and big data systems.

PhD Course on Data Analytics

The aim of the course is to introduce students to two important elements of data engineering technology that makes it possible to extract valuable knowledge from “Big Data”, namely distributed data processing using the MapReduce framework, and data analytics of large graphs. In each case, the course will first introduce fundamental theoretical and architectural concepts, and then present technology for using MapReduce and querying large graphs, respectively. For MapReduce, we present examples of algorithms that can be successfully parallelised and thus are able to take advantage of distributed data architectures, and we will suggest practical exercises using the Spark and Hadoop technology stack. Regarding graph analytics, we focus on community detection algorithms as an example, and we will usethe Neo4J graph DBMS along with the Graph Data Science library for practical exercises.

The course will be held online in the ICT class of Microsoft Teams by professor Paolo Missier and Ph.D. Luca Gagliardelli

D-Day 2019

Sonia Bergamaschi

Seminar Announcement

Dear Phd students, next Monday 29 January we have organized a working day "Why deep learning is so cool". Within the day, we have organised a talk by Prof. Naftali Tishby, Hebrew University of Jerusalem: "Information Theory of Deep Learning".

Abstract of the seminar:I will present a novel comprehensive theory of large scale learning with Deep Neural Networks, based on the correspondence between Deep Learning and the Information Bottlneck framework. The new theory has the following components: (1) rethinking Learning theory; I will prove a new generalization bound, the input-compression bound, which shows that compression of the representation of input variable is far more important for good generalization than the dimension of the network hypothesis class, an ill defined notion for deep learning. (2) I will prove that for large scale Deep Neural Networks the mutual information on the input and the output variables, for the last hidden layer, provide a complete characterization of the sample complexity and accuracy of the network. This makes the information Bottlneck bound for the problem as the optimal trade-off between sample complexity and accuracy with ANY learning algorithm. (3) I will show how Stochastic Gradient Descent, as used in Deep Learning, achieves this optimal bound. In that sense, Deep Learning is a method for solving the Information Bottlneck problem for large scale supervised learning problems. The theory provide a new computational understating of the benefit of the hidden layers, and gives concrete predictions for the structure of the layers of Deep Neural Networks and their design principles. These turn out to depend solely on the joint distribution of the input and output and on the sample size.

This talk is partially supported by the Doctorate School in ICT of UNIMORE (the phd students which need an attentance declaration should send an email to lorenzo.baraldi@unimore.it)

" Big data analytics beyond MapReduce"

Abstract: MapReduce was introduced by Google in 2004. Thanks to its functional programming abstraction and fault-tolerant distributed framework, MapReduce makes easy to write parallel programs. In 2004 MapReduce was mostly used for web indexing; however nowadays we are seeing different type of applications (relational, graphs or machine learning analytics for example) which does not fit well within the MapReduce paradigm. In this talk I will use some research projects I have been working on in the past years to (1) introduce Apache Spark and Apache REEF; (2) describe how relational, graphs and machine learning applications can be efficiently run at scale using such systems; and (3) illustrate system's pros, cons and design choices.

Venerdì 15 Dicembre 2017, ore 16,30-18,00, nell'Aula P1.6, il dottore di ricerca Matteo Interlandi, terrà il Seminario:
“Quick Develoment Big Data Analytics Tools"

Abstract: Implementing data processing logic in Data-Intensive Scalable Computing (DISC) systems is a difficult and time consuming effort. Today’s DISC systems offer many special purpose programming models and Domain Specific Languages, but very little tooling for debugging and profiling programs. As a result, programmers spend countless hours in stitching together subprograms written using different APIs, and performing trial and error debugging using log traces as evidences. To aid this effort, in the last years I have help in building a set of tools allowing developers to reduce the overall time to market for their Big Data Analytics. In particular, in this talk I will describe how relational, graphs and machine learning applications can be efficiently run at scale using the tooling I contributed to develop."

Bio: Matteo Interlandi is a Research Scientist in the Cloud and Information Services Lab (CISL) at Microsoft, working on scalable Machine Learning Systems. Before Microsoft, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the CS Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining UCLA, he was Research Associate at the Qatar Computing Research Institute and at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia under the supervision of Sonia Bergamaschi.
