Lorenzo Benatti has been awarded the prestigious SIE (Società Italiana di Elettronica) Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2026 for his outstanding doctoral research in microelectronics.

Benatti’s thesis explores ultra-low-power computing architectures for edge AI applications, with a focus on brain-inspired (neuromorphic) circuits, emerging non-volatile memories—such as ferroelectric devices and memristors—and Logic-in-Memory designs. Supervised by Prof. Francesco Maria Puglisi at UniMORE’s "Enzo Ferrari" Department of Engineering, his research bridges materials science and circuit design to create hardware capable of processing complex AI workloads at a fraction of traditional power consumption.

The national award by the Società Italiana di Elettronica recognizes the most impactful and innovative doctoral theses in electronics across Italian universities. Lorenzo's thesis was selected by a committee whose members are distinguished professors and non-academic experts in the field and was chosen among the many submitted from several national universities and polytechnics.
